What material actually stops rats from chewing back into an attic?

Galvanized steel hardware cloth in a quarter-inch grid stops both roof rats and mice and resists gnawing and coastal corrosion. Around pipes and irregular gaps, dense copper or stainless mesh is packed in and locked with a rodent-resistant sealant. Foam or steel wool alone does not hold, because rats chew through soft fillers.

Is sealing the attic better than just trapping the rats?

Trapping removes the rodents already inside but leaves the opening they used, so a new rat follows the scent trail back within days. Sealing every entry point with rated materials breaks that cycle. In San Diego's mild climate there is no winter freeze to reduce numbers, so exclusion is what keeps an attic rat-free long term.

How do I know every entry point was sealed?

A complete attic rodent proofing job includes a free inspection that maps every current and likely gap, inside and outside, and photo documentation of each sealed point. That lets a homeowner see the eaves, vents, and roof jacks that were closed. To schedule a free inspection with AtticGuard, call (858) 330-6197.
